The former director has asserted his non-guilt regarding the charges

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

His attorney entered the plea on his behalf in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer announced he would attempt to have the case thrown out for multiple factors including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was indicted just days after the former president pressured his top legal official to take action against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they intended to file multiple legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a court case, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully designated to handle the legal matter.

Mr Comey's case was initially managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his probe into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey seemed in good spirits as he entered the court on Wednesday, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and child Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the magistrate recite his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about four months into Trump's initial presidency as president. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, the director sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against the candidate were not pursued, leading to criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to Congress during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the upper house by stating he had not permitted someone at the FBI to leak to media organizations details about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also accuse Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and slow" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media the former director published to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"Our household have known for years that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey came after Trump published on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and others.
